Hey, guys, I want to share a little update on our camper living and home building plans. We are still living in our camper, and getting the seemingly endless details worked out for home building.
I decided to measure the interior of the camper this week, just so you would know that I’m not kidding when I call it a tiny camper. Nine feet wide (only about 2 foot-wide walking space) and fifteen feet long. About six feet of that length is occupied by the width of the bed on one end and the depth of the kitchen counters on the other end. Y’all, that’s less than 150 square feet! I joke that if one of us needs to move around, the other has to step outside. I have banned all eating of beans while living in our cozy space.
I’m not sure how we will handle freezing temperatures in the camper. If any of you have experience with keeping hoses and tanks from freezing, please let me know. We hope to move the camper to the land once we get the road and utilities in. That will save us rent at the campground, though I am a little nervous about not having a backup bathroom. I will need to find a laundromat, too.
I suppose it shouldn’t come as a surprise that everything takes longer and costs more than one would expect. ~sigh~ Though there aren’t any exciting projects to show you, we are making progress, I promise.
The land survey was done this week. There is county water, but no sewer available at our land, so I spent a couple of hours at the building permit office applying for a septic tank permit. We had confirmation that our proposed building site near the back is the right decision- the soil wouldn’t perk for a septic at the front section of land. I would love to have a water well dug, but the uncertainties on cost discouraged us from going that route.
Over the creek and through the woods… We met with a grader yesterday to talk about locating the driveway. Since the house will be set pretty far back from the street, the driveway and utilities will cost more than we had hoped. Ugh! We should be getting the driveway in next week.
We are working with a builder to finalize floor plans. If you follow on facebook, you have seen several options we have been considering. Check out my house plans pinterest board for more inspiration. We have fused parts of a couple of plans, flipped and turned and tweaked to get things just right for us. I’ll share the final once we have it.
I am so enjoying the visits to the land. All the pictures on this post were taken while trekking through our woods. Honestly, if the weather stayed as nice as it has been this fall, I would be happy just living under the trees. Well, except for bugs and critters that would want to share the space. Oh, and the lack of a shower. Hmmm, let me rethink this….
Soooo, once the actual building begins, there will be tons more decisions to make. I would love to hear your recommendations for finding the best deals on cabinets and flooring. Oh, and appliances. What else am I not thinking of?
