As we experience that seasonal urge to make things clean and fresh, why not take this time to do a little spring cleaning of the heart as well? Let’s tackle this together by stimulating one another to love and good deeds. Hebrews 10:24
All Scripture references are from the New American Standard Bible.
Sometimes “little” sins are easy to justify and hide away. Hidden though they may seem to be, they start to distort our thinking and cause us to distance ourselves from the One who loves us best.
Just as we do in our household spring cleaning, let’s take inventory to see what we should discard and what we should keep. Since our emotions are highly unreliable as truth indicators, we’ll look to Scripture to help us determine what is treasure and what is trash.
We’ll take inventory in three areas.
What is our attitude toward the people God has put around us?
Love: Love is a determined choice, not a fickle emotion.
By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:35
Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Matthew 5:44
How do we love our enemies? With our actions: But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Luke 6:35
Wisdom: Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of every opportunity. Colossians 4:5
Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander… 1 Peter 2:1
What is our attitude toward the things in our lives? Home, status, job, money.
Contentment: Make sure your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never leave you, nor will I ever forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life. John 6:27
Lust and pride: For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 1 John 2:16
What is our attitude toward God?
His Word: Whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. 1 John 2:5
Honor: Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 1:17
Love: And He said to him, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ Matthew 22:37
Idols: Anything that has displaced God’s preeminence. Do television, internet, shopping, food, and other activities capture more of our time and interest?
Little children, guard yourselves from idols. 1 John 5:21
Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, ‘I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.’ 2 Corinthians 6:16
These are just a few guidelines to help us seek God about any spring cleaning of the heart that we may need. No condemnation here- this is an opportunity to run into the arms of God, not turn away in shame.
He loves us for eternity and with all that He has. He gave us Jesus, after all.
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16
but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7
Aaah, take a deep breath and feel how the weight has been lifted off when we have a clean heart and a fresh start.
