After spreading tons (literally) of rock to make our River Rock Sidewalk last week, I decided to come inside and work on a less strenuous project. I had been looking for a full length mirror for the master bedroom. Of course, the ones I love are expensive. Pffft. It’s more fun to figure out how to add decorative detail to mirrors and have a one-of-a-kind piece that coordinates with my other décor.
This mirror was originally navy with no detail other than a fake grainy texture. Here you can see it propped up in the chosen space between Richard’s closet and the master bath doors.
I chose a wood applique from my stash to somewhat mimic the painted wood wall hanging over the bed.
After taping off the mirror, I painted the frame a soft white and the applique purple. I washed the same white paint over the purple to soften it and highlight the details.
TIP: To whitewash, simply dip your brush in water, then in the white paint and brush on. Wipe off any excess.
Here is the painted applique with and without the whitewash.
Okay, time to position the applique onto the mirror frame. Once I found the center and determined how much of the applique I wanted to extend past the top, I marked it with tape in a few spots on each end. This would help to place it with a minimum of adjustments once the glue was applied to the back.
After applying wood glue to the back, I clamped it in place. Paper towels were placed between the applique and the clamps to protect the finish.
I added a quick coat of clear polycrylic to protect the finish. The color on the decorative applique isn’t an exact match to the wall hanging, but it coordinates well enough. This narrow space between the doors was the perfect spot for a mirror.
How to Add Decorative Detail to Mirrors- Pin and save for later:
This mirror isn’t as ornate as the ones I’m drawn to, but updating it with a simple wood applique is actually a better look for the space.
For your convenience, here are a few of the items I used for this project. Some are affiliate links, which means if you buy from them, I get a wee commission at no additional cost to you. This helps to offset the costs of my website- thank you for your support.
Spring clamps (I have a variety of sizes; these are similar to the ones I use.)
Command picture hanging strips (I used 4 sets to hang the mirror.)
