Hanging the Garden Trellis Headboard

Sometimes a project gets started and comes really close to completion, so close that I convince myself that it’s “good enough for now.” Such was the case with my garden trellis headboard. Remember that project?

DIY Garden Trellis Headboard

I wired the three trellises together and simply propped them up behind the bed. That’s how it has stayed since May of last year. Yeah….

Hanging a Garden Trellis Headboard

Time to call in MacGyver, aka Richard. He always amazes me with the way he can engineer things. For this project, he cut a 1×6 board just shorter than the width of the bed and painted it the wall color. No, that wasn’t the MacGyver part, duh.

He kept the trellises wired together and attached them to the board with straps he cut and shaped from L-brackets. (I suggested plumbing straps, but he said they wouldn’t be stiff enough.) Though they wouldn’t be visible, he painted them also.

He marked the wall studs and screwed the board to the wall. (We could have attached it to the bed frame, but we would still have the problem of the trellises banging against the wall.)

Attaching Trellis Headboard to wall

I knew I wanted to hang the headboard higher than it was when propped on the floor. The need to avoid an outlet determined just how high we would hang it.

Ok, we still have the issue of  headboard clatter causing heart-stopping moments in the dark of night. Here is where Richard’s MacGyver tendencies really came to light.

In order to keep the top of the headboard the same distance from the wall as the bottom, he cut 2 pieces of 3/8″ pvc pipe to the depth of the 1×6. He drilled a couple of holes and ran wire through the holes. This picture shows the screw inserted into the wrong end, so if you  try this, insert the screw in the opposite end. I have no idea why, just telling you what Richard said.

He screwed them to the wall behind the two sets of overlapping vertical posts.

Next, Richard wrapped the wire around the vertical posts, making sure the ends were wrapped to the back. Then, he removed the wire he had used for temporary placement.

Ahh, no more clatter. Now that the headboard is positioned higher, I think I need some Euro shams to help with proportion. What do you think?

Do you have a MacGyver to call on, or are you the resourceful one?

Just thought I would share – I was trying to come up with a new headboard & had gone to Hobby Lobby today to find picture frames to use, when I found these same trellises instead. Brought them home & propped them up like you originally had, then hopped on Google to find ideas for securing them and found your blog. 🙂 Strange small world, isn’t it?

  2. Gorgeous, Sheila!
You could always get some bed risers or have your MacGyver build something to raise the bed a bit. But, that headboard is so very pretty, it might be a shame to cover up any!
    Love it!

  3. Hi Sheila, Your husband is quite handy and the headboard looks wonderful. I had to giggle at your comments about banging against the wall! Thanks for linking to the Open House party.

  8. That’s a fabulous idea Sheila, but the banging in the middle of the night would have scared me to death. I have all the beds I need at present but I can see this happening one day. Yay MacGyver 🙂

  9. Richard is quite ingenious. I must say the Trellis headboard was very secure the peaceful night I stayed in this room.
