We are getting so close to the end of our building home adventure! I have whined about many of the frustrations and disappointments, and tried desperately to remember that all of this doesn’t really matter in the eternal scheme of things. Or maybe it does. After all, the pruning that God does in our lives through hardships does fashion us more into His image little by little. Kicking and screaming though I may be.
Anyway, this seemed like a good time to look through the building home progression to see just how far we have come. If you follow on facebook or instagram, you have seen these pictures and more as we went along. You can also see the beginning of the process in Building Home Update.
My first material selection was the brick for the foundation:
The framing went really fast:
The siding and roof were the next selections I had to decide on. I visited three siding places before I found a company that makes vinyl shakes in the same color as their clapboard siding. Silly me, I didn’t want a contrasting color….
You can see a peek of the vinyl shakes in this picture. Columns on the front porch really add some character. The railings were added this week, will show you that later.
Once the sheetrock went up, things really started moving along. It seemed like Christmas morning when the cabinets showed up.
A little peek at the kitchen:
Tile in the guest bath (walls are not purple- that’s the moisture resistant sheetrock.):
Tile in the master bath:
Yep, I went purple in the master bath, and I love the light fixtures. Cindy at Black’s Lighting was so patient with me as I agonized over light fixtures. I think they were my most difficult decision. I’ll show you the others as we move in.
Oh, speaking of lighting, I bought this fixture a few months ago at a consignment store. Had planned to use it in our foyer. Until I tried to clean it. I had the glass “safely” in a box while I cleaned the top. The nut that holds the glass in place rolled off our camper’s micro counter and, you guessed it, landed right on the glass. Ugh!
The latest addition is the garage door. This was one thing I was determined not to mess up by trusting someone to get it right. I can’t tell you how many times we have messed up by trusting others to do their job right in this home building process. After going round and round with one garage door guy, who could never seem to get the selection right, I went with another guy, even though he was slightly more expensive. Worth it to get the right door, dontcha’ think?
Our water, gas, and septic were hooked to the house this week, so we have been walking over to the house to take our showers. Shhh….
To go: door hardware, paint touch ups, stone on the fireplace, final grading on the yard, concrete on part of the driveway- we’re getting close!
We didn’t plan to build our next house. To see how it all came about, check out the progression:
I have my first little project in the new house coming up soon. One of my favorite budget friendly design tools- stencils. And a giveaway! Stay tuned….
