Painted Bookcase with Graphics Transfer Quote

Hey, guys. I hope you had a great weekend. I mostly spent the weekend in my jammies, not a bad way to relax, huh? Last week, before the scary snow day, I worked on several projects for my booth. One thing I desperately needed was more display space, so this bookcase was a priority. I was a basket case after the accident, so I’m glad I got several things done earlier in the week.

You know you've read a good book when- PlumDoodles.com

The bookcase started out unpainted with no back. After removing a couple of corner braces, I filled some dings and nail holes with wood filler and started painting with my fave General Finishes milk paint in snow white. It is much easier to paint and glaze before adding beadboard backing.

I love to read and when I came across this quote, I thought it was perfect to transfer to the top of the bookcase.

I created the graphic with PicMonkey, then printed the reverse image on a laser printer and transferred using Doodle Magic. Added a brown glaze and finished with a couple of coats of polycrylic, then it was time to add the beadboard back.

Most of the decorative items I paint and sell are white or neutral, so I decided to paint the beadboard a non-neutral color to contrast with the displayed goodies. General Finishes apparently heard how much I love their milk paint (and purple), so they offered to send me a sample of their newest paint color, Royal Purple. This was the perfect project on which to give it a try.

Nothing neutral about that, huh?! Open-mouthed smile

It was bit too much purple, even for me, so I brushed watered down white milk paint over it, and wiped away for a whitewashed effect.

I used small nails to attach the beadboard to the back of the bookcase.

I think all those neutral décor items will show up nicely on here, don’t you?

Check out my facebook page to see how other people finished the sentence, “You know you’ve read a good book when….”  How would you finish the sentence?

  1. Sheila, I love the way you finished your bookcase! The wash is perfect for the bead board back! I love the quote would finish the end of of it by I would want the book “to continue on and on”. This is a great display piece and I think it will blow out of your booth.

  2. Pretty, Sheila! I love the quote!

  3. I love the color you changed the too much purple too, not positive, but looks like one of my favorite colors…periwinkle blue. You know you’ve read a good book when you are so sad the story ended.

  4. Oh I love the colour in the background! Umm I have friended authors on Facebook so I can keep up with their next books when I really like a book, but I think I know I have read a good book when I discuss the characters like they’re my friends LOL
