Need Area Rug Advice

I don’t know why I am having such a hard time finishing the keeping room. I still haven’t decided on the window treatments, and now I am stumped on the floor. I need area rug advice. Patti, my booth-mate at the shop let me bring home her area rug to try, and I’m just not sure about the color.

It’s a beautiful charcoal gray and cream rug. I really, really love it. It looks great with the tv stand I painted. The rug would probably go about 4 to 6 inches underneath this piece, but I didn’t fully roll it out since I’m not sure if I’m keeping it.

Area Rug- Tv Stand-

Ok, here’s the dilemma. Our love seat is a dark royal, almost navy blue. It’s closer to navy blue than this picture shows.

Area Rug- Love Seat-

Richard’s recliner is black leather. Sooo, is the rug too dark with the love seat and recliner? Does it clash with the blue love seat? Most everything else is taupe-y white with warm wood tone accents.

Oh, and don’t forget the blue stenciled wall. By the way, we did move the wii to a drawer, so that bright white box is no longer glaring out at me.

Tv Stand- Stenciled Wall-

Sooo, I originally thought I would keep it light and airy. I have a small light blue plaid rug that I have been using temporarily- I love the look, but the size is way too small. Or I could go with bare wood floors. Any thoughts? Could someone volunteer to just come and fix my room and let me come home to a nice surprise? Anyone? Winking smile

  1. I know you said you didn’t roll it all the way out, Sheila, but do you have a fuller room view with the rug down? From what I can see in your pictures, it looks like it would work fine. You could just keep the rug {or any rug you wind up using} down in the colder months and just do bare wood floors in Spring/Summer. Of course, it depends on how you feel about it, too. Can you hold onto it for a few days so you can look at it and see how you feel when you walk into the room?

    • Kathy, I couldn’t do a fuller room view, because that would mean cleaning first! :D I still love the rug, but the color and pattern seems to clash with the blue stenciled wall. I may try to figure out somewhere else to use it.

  2. That’s a tough one! I tend to think that dark pieces on a dark rug can make a room feel very cozy. But if you’re not going for cozy and need the room to feel lighter or bigger, then a lighter rug might be the way to go. Decisions, decisions…

  3. Wow, this is a difficult one! I love it with the tv stand. I’m not sure about the stencil on the wall and the rug together. It may have a lot of pattern going on. I agree with Kathy. Walk it around the room and try it for a few days.

  4. I like the idea of light and airy with not much pattern…If you love the look of your blue plaid, can you get it in a larger size?

  5. I love bare wood floors but they are a bit too cold in Winter, still I think that’s what I would go for :)
