DIY Dessert Domes

One of the first projects I shared on Plum Doodles was DIY Cupcake Stands- remember those? I’ve found that people prefer to buy them with covers. The small dessert stands can be topped with a cheese dome. However, the ones made from dinner plates need something larger. Cake domes are easy enough to find, but I wanted something less expensive.

Can you guess what it is? Yep, a cover from a light fixture. I’ve made cloches from candle sconces, so why not dessert domes from a light fixture? I recently saw a gorgeous cloche made from a light fixture, by Jeanette from Creating a Life.

Supplies and directions may vary depending on the type of cover and knob you use.

Supplies:

Light fixture cover

Cabinet knob

Various washers

Screw- stainless steel, so it doesn’t rust

Loctite Thread Locker Blue (the red tube totally threw me off)

Assemble:

Parts go in the order shown in the picture above. Thread the metal and plastic washers onto the screw, then add a tiny bit of Loctite to the thread of the screw and into the hole of the knob. The blue Loctite in the red tube will keep the screw from coming loose, but is removable. There is another version that is permanent.

For this dome, I placed a clear plastic washer on the hole in the top of the dome, then the knob on top of that. It is a tiny bit tricky trying to hold the dome with the knob and washer in place, while screwing the screw assembly from underneath.

I love the chef dudes on the plate. The black knob coordinates with the black detail on the plate.

While I had the glue and sandpaper out, I also did this rooster plate, although I almost hated to use the pretty blue glass.

Time to find some cheese domes for the smaller dessert stands.

Note: Depending on the material of your knobs, I probably wouldn’t put these DIY Dessert Domes into the dish washer.

This is amazing ! Only problem for mine is that the opening on top are all much bigger! Any advice?

    • Hmm, I’m not sure. Maybe you could find a metal or hard plastic disc that you could drill a small hole in, then glue over the opening? Sometimes the light covers already have a metal escutcheon that goes over the opening. Or you can buy escutcheons that go behind cabinet knobs, but that would increase your cost quite a bit unless you can find them in a thrift store.

  13. That’s a great idea. I have a light dome that I bought a few years back, but was the wrong size and I was too lazy to return it. I’ve been racking my brain to try and come up with something crafty for it, but no luck until I just saw this. I don’t think mine is domed enough for something like that, but it does give me some other sparks so THANK YOU for the inspiration and I will be awaiting the gift of my very own homemade (by you, of course) dessert plate with domed lid.
