Hey, guys! I hope you don’t mind- today will be a little different around here. My grandmother (we call her Nanny) is getting a little older, and I want to be more intentional about talking to her about her life, her faith, her perspective. Just to warn you, this will probably be random on topics and timing, but I want to capture those remembrances here, ok? Ok!
A couple of weeks ago, I asked Nanny to tell me about when she and Poppy dated, how they got engaged, that sort of thing. She surprised me on so many counts!
First of all, her mom didn’t allow her to date, so she and Poppy met in secret. When I asked her what they did on their dates, she said they would meet in the woods and walk to her brother’s home. No restaurants or malls back then.
Prodding a little more, trying to imagine a young Nanny on a date, I asked, “Well, didn’t you hug and kiss while you were dating?”
“NO! I was *quire like that! I wasn’t going to let a boy touch me before I got married!” Yep, she and Poppy never hugged or kissed until their wedding day.
Next time- a sweet proposal.
Doodles,
*quire: I’m not quite sure how to spell it, but it means odd or different. Is this a Southern thing, or strictly a north Georgia mountains word?
Partying here:

Hey, I'm Sheila, and I'm so glad you're here! Stick around for a doodle of fun, faith, and furniture. Want to learn more?

So sweet! I love those old fashioned values!Things sure have changed since then!

Oh that’s beautiful! People think they’re so liberated these days but they let the lust cloud their judgement instead of making sure they have met someone with who they can spend the good and bad times. The world was a better place with those values

I treasure the memories of conversations like this with my grandmother. So very special. Your entire family will treasure these memories you’re capturing with your sweet Nanny. BTW my Mom and Dad are also known as Nanny and Poppy to all the grandkids!
That is so sweet! Thank you for sharing! I love, love, love stories like this. I am excited to hear about the proposal.

So sweet! I think she is saying “queer” …………
my mother in law (born in 1919); used the same term (appalachian mtns-ky) she and my father in law dated/married in secret! she went home and spent honeymoon night at home w/mom and dad. they met on a cake/pie social at the school.
great stories, keep asking her about her life.
My grandmother didn’t permit dating either. My Dad called on my mother and they sat in the living room while grandmother was sitting in the kitchen listening to every word. She had arranged a mirror so that she could watch them from the kitchen. She wasn’t alone with him until their wedding day. Times were sure different.
