When I saw this outdoor light fixture cover, I immediately thought of turning it into a diy candle lantern. Or elaborate cloche….
This is what it looked like before:
Thingies stick out from the bottom which the screws go into, so I couldn’t simply set it on a plate.
In order to make a base for it, I first traced the bottom onto a piece of paper, then used the width of my flexible ruler as a guide to enlarge the pattern. This picture shows the pattern after one enlargement, but I actually added one more ruler width.
I cut out the pattern, taped it to a scrap piece of wood, and cut it using my miter saw.
Then, it became a collaborative effort. Richard used his router to fancy up the edges and drilled holes for the screw thingies to sit in.
I painted the lantern, then painted and distressed the base. The lantern can be screwed to the base if desired, or for easy access when using a candle, it can simply be set onto the base, lining up with the holes.
Have you used lighting fixtures in new ways?
Doodles,

Love it, Sheila! I found a light I bought at the Restore a couple of years ago when I was in the attic getting the Christmas stuff. Since I’ve been wanting to get a couple of bird feeders, I think I’m going to adapt it into a feeder. I’m going to need a base though, so I’ll be on the lookout for something I can use.
Ooh, I like that idea, Kathy!
This is one of my favorite remakes! You have great vision! You make me think of all the things I’ve given away that could be re-purposed! I’m calling you from now on! Great remake!

What a great way to reuse old fixtures! I bet you could find a bunch of these at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore for cheap.
You’re right- I’ve seen similar ones at the ReStore!
