Another DIY Cloche From Glass Candle Sconce

I came up with a brilliant plan for those glass candle sconces that I mentioned in my first diy cloche project.  They have rounded tops (bottoms?), so I couldn’t simply glue a knob on top like before. As you can see from this finished project, my brilliant plan didn’t work out.

So, what was that brilliant misguided plan, you ask? Oh, you didn’t ask? Well, here goes anyway. Winking smile

I kept thinking there had to be some way to get a flat surface that I could glue a knob onto. Ah! Super Sculpy! No, I’ve never used this stuff before, but it sounded like a good idea. I rolled a hunk into a ball, smushed it (technical term) onto the dome, and trimmed the top flat.

Because I wasn’t sure if they might collapse if I took them off the domes, I left them on, placed them on a cookie sheet, and baked according to the sculpey package directions. Here’s what one looked like after removing.

After they cooled, I glued a knob on one and a bird on the other. I know, these birds seem to be multiplying. I’ve used them on my front door wreath, the blooming initial, and ceramic and jute topiaries. There may be a few more hiding around here somewhere!

Ok, here’s where it gets funky. I painted them white and added a brown glaze(no pictures at this point). I wanted to be sure the sculpey was really sturdy and the glue was holding everything together. Sooo, I started pulling on the base and it broke off in pieces! I pouted over it for a few days, then thought, why do they need a knob on top anyway?

I repainted birdie blue and added a black glaze to coordinate with this thrift store plate. Hot glued him in a nest with a rock and a couple of glass pebbles.

Add the knobless dome and I have another diy cloche!

The color goes well with my blue and white Lochs of Scotland stoneware, though I’m rethinking the placement under the rooster’s hiney- looks a little odd….

I’m not sure what I did wrong with the Super Sculpey, but I guess I’ll be adding it to the flop folder, along with my decoupage pumpkin. And you can file this diy cloche project into the what-not-to-do or the be-happy-with-it-the-way-it-is folder. Smile Have you had any project flops recently?

Doodles,
