How to Add Privacy to Windows

The sidelights on either side of our front door have been somewhat of a dilemma since we moved into this house. The daylight coming in was great. The visitor peeks, not so much. Here’s how to add privacy to windows.

I’ve had sheers over the windows for a couple of years. I made the sheers overly full for the privacy factor, but it gave them too much of a poofy look.

Before: Sheers

I’ve seen several bloggers use clear contact paper for frosting windows, so I thought I’d give it a try.

  • Measure each window pane and cut the contact paper slightly larger. Our sidelights have 5 panes on each side.
  • Clean the glass thoroughly, then peel the backing off the contact paper.
  • Saturate the window with water and slightly wet the back of the contact paper. This makes it easier to apply it to the window, allowing you to slide it into position. [The following two pictures show my attempt using window cleaner as recommended by several bloggers. Unfortunately, it left a hazy smeary look when viewed on the outside. I ended up doing all the panes over using just plain water.]

Saturate the glass

Position the paper, then holding it in place, trim the excess with an exacto knife. Just run the knife along the edge of the frame for a straight cut.

Press out excess moisture and air bubbles

Press out any excess moisture and air bubbles with a soft cloth. Repeat 9 more times. Or 19 more times if you don’t bother to check the other side before doing ALL the windows….

After: Clear Contact Paper on Sidelights

Ah, a much cleaner look. But I’m noticing I need to repaint the window frames now that they’re exposed. Hmm, where are those sheers?

In case you missed it, here’s how I made the door hanging.

For the cost of a roll of clear contact paper, we now have filtered light during the day and privacy at night. I’m satisfied with the results. Will you try this little project to add privacy to windows in your home?

  1. Nice! Affordable and neat… and, what’s important, no more poofy sheers for a much cleaner look. I bet they were dust gatherers…

  2. That looks great Sheila. I really love your door scroll too, that is super pretty!

  3. I’ve had sheer lace in our two windows near our front door for years, but I have been thinking of switching over to blinds for more privacy. This might be a perfect fix instead and will be cheaper. Thanks for the idea and pictures explaining how to do it!

  4. is it really just clear contact paper? the clear I have transparent, so did you use the clear that has a slight frostiness to it?

    • Kirsten, the package label calls it clear. It does look clear when covering something solid, but on the windows, it looks frosted. I know, weird, huh? :)
